You could maybe stick the moon up there... I like the absence of a horizon line, but the moon could put throw some dim light onto the dog and the tree. I kinda think the tree trunk at least should be styled a little more like the dog... with the flat color, and the outline. I like the grass, and the leaves just appearing out of the darkness, but I think some similarity of some kind should kind of tie the background and the foreground together a bit.
Well, I like the idea of a story set in a gray world. All things are bland and dull, but one man suddenly sees this strange canine (be it fox, dog, coyote, or living pinata, I suppose) and it leads him to a world of stark contrast and bright vivid color.
So I like the idea of the "dog" speaking Japanese, but mirrored, so it seems stranger. It says いらしゃいませ. Apparently it's something that people at stores will say in welcome to customers.
And I'm not sure whether I prefer changing the "dog" to be more like the tree, or the tree to be more like the "dog"...
